  • Manna Food Center in Gaithersburg said USDA cuts to two pandemic-era programs have driven up the cost of fresh produce for food boxes, with prices rising from $40 to $50 to about $72 each. CEO Craig Rice warned that lost local farm support will challenge food access and farmers' income this summer—pushing more residents to seek assistance amid federal workforce layoffs.  WUSA9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MCPS will hold public information meetings on school boundary studies for Woodward, Crown, and Damascus high schools to address overcrowding and plan for new facilities. The meetings will include a virtual session on April 2 (6 to 8 p.m.) and an in-person session on April 8 (6 to 8 p.m.) for Woodward, with additional sessions on April 7 and April 9 (6 to 8 p.m.) for Crown and Damascus.  Montgomery Community Media

  • County Council Vice President Will Jawando has introduced Expedited Bill 10-25 to give laid-off federal workers living in Montgomery County preferential consideration when applying for jobs if they were notified of a reduction in force on or after Jan. 1 — the measure, set to be discussed at a hearing on April 1 at 1:30 p.m. — aims to retain local talent and secure the county's tax base.  WTOP
  • Montgomery County passed new legislation Tuesday that shortens the wait for abandoned pet adoptions from five to three days to help ease overcrowding at its Derwood animal shelter—councilmember Sidney Katz and other members helped draft the law.  MoCo360
  • A bill to stop state support for trash incinerators remains stalled in committee but may live on if added to the Next Generation Energy Act—lawmakers plan energy reforms while environmental advocates worry pollution may harm nearby communities.  MoCo360
  • County Council Vice President Will Jawando (D-At-large) introduced a bill that would give displaced federal workers who lost their jobs after Jan. 1 and can show a loss of income the chance to get an interview before others when applying for county jobs. A public hearing on the bill is set for April 1 at 1:30 p.m., and if passed, it would go into effect immediately and last for one year.  MoCo360
