BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Ms. Corporate America Maryland pageant will occur on Saturday in Montgomery County and will highlight 11 women in business from various counties. Organization president Alethia Tucker and current Ms. Corporate America Sierra Morgan discussed how the event will support women in the workplace.  WJLA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new report by transportation nonprofit TRIPS shows drivers in Maryland’s D.C. suburbs incur over ($3,500) yearly in extra costs from poor road conditions, including 90 hours in traffic and 26 gallons wasted. The findings come as 27% of suburban roads are rated poor compared to 30% statewide.  WTOP

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Monday, education leaders and local officials gathered at Burnt Mills Elementary (Silver Spring) to celebrate Read Across America Day by reading to students and donating 20 new hardcover books. They stressed that the event helps encourage reading and build knowledge.  MoCo360
  • Students from five schools will head to state STEM finals on May 2 at Johns Hopkins University, where 27 projects are judged virtually — featuring innovations in wearable tech and clean-up robots designed to solve real-world problems.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • About 430 MCPS (Montgomery County Public Schools) students competed in Montgomery County History Day on March 7 at Sligo Middle School. The top two entries in five categories will move on to state competition Saturday, May 2 at UMBC.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • MCPS held the third annual EmpowHERed Leaders’ Summit on March 6 at The Universities at Shady Grove where 160 students networked and learned leadership skills. Student leaders shared success stories in business, literature, and activism and helped set up a Free Little Library at a nearby school.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • Four trailblazers from MCPS received the 2026 Women Making History Award from the Montgomery County Commission for Women + Montgomery Women for their leadership in promoting inclusion and social justice. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Leaders from D.C., Maryland and Virginia said on Wednesday that federal funding may be needed for five to 10 years to repair damage from the Potomac sewage spill (the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is overseeing cleanup) as part of a regional effort.  FOX 5 DC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich will lead a six-member economic mission to Taipei and New Delhi from Sunday to March 26, promoting business investment at the Smart City Summit and Expo and IndiaSoft Expo (trip costs are under $35K).  MoCo360
  • Montgomery County Council heard views on Councilmember Will Jawando’s proposed bill to ban rent-setting algorithms that use public and private data to recommend rents at a hearing Tuesday at the Rockville council office. Twenty industry representatives and tenant advocates gave their input.  WTOP
  • Gov. Wes Moore announced that his upcoming budget will include $3M in grants to fund exterior upgrades for small businesses within half a mile of the Purple Line. Montgomery County Parks also delayed the opening of its grass athletic fields due to wet conditions, with permits canceled until April 1.  MoCo360

  • Families can access free health services including dental screenings & wellness classes at the Black Family Wellness Expo on Saturday at Montgomery College’s Rockville campus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  MoCo360

  • Magruder High’s basketball team (22-2) won 60-57 in overtime on March 11 as a buzzer-beater forced extra time at Richard Montgomery High School. The Colonels will face South River High School in the state championship game at UMBC’s Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena soon.  MoCo360
  • Prep phenom Baba Oladotun returned for James Hubert Blake after an ankle injury, scoring a go-ahead layup with six seconds left to secure a 66-64 overtime win against Meade.
