EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Nicole Chang (a junior at Walter Johnson High) won the PRO Rising Star Award on Feb. 7 at a gala recognizing her design and leadership. The honor spotlights a scholarship program from PRO and MCPS Construction Trades Foundation to support students. Montgomery County Public Schools
- ➤ On Feb. 26, students and alumni from Gaithersburg, Paint Branch and Kennedy celebrated CTE Month by sharing how Career and Technical Education builds skills and opens doors for new opportunities in local careers. Montgomery County Public Schools
- ➤ WMATA board approved expanding the U-Pass program to (full-, part-, graduate, and community college) students starting Fall 2026-2027, providing transit discounts built into tuition for 43 local institutions. The expansion will ease daily commutes and make affordable transit a reality for many students in our region. WUSA9
- ➤ Montgomery County Public Schools approved the official calendar for the 2026 to 2027 school year that sets Student Transition Day on Monday, Aug. 24 and classes starting Tuesday, Aug. 25 with the school year ending Tuesday, June 16. - ➤ About 300 residents gathered at Walt Whitman High School on Thursday to hear DC Water’s update on the Potomac sewage spill as crews removed rock and conducted daily water testing. Officials said the drinking water remained safe despite elevated bacteria levels — community members called for additional testing and long-term accountability. WUSA9

- ➤ Maryland lawmakers debated a proposal during a House Labor Committee hearing on Thursday in Montgomery County to raise the minimum wage to $25 an hour and phase out tipped pay. Opinions varied among restaurant workers, with some expressing concerns while others supported the change. FOX 5 DC
