  • Montgomery County officials and community members remembered Marye Wells-Harley, who died Feb. 11 after serving 42 years in parks and planning. The Silver Spring leader set a high standard of public service and remains an enduring role model for local stewardship.  MoCo360

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wrenacyn (in Poolesville) was founded by Elizabeth Meltzer and Kayla Johnson to create inclusive equestrian programs that offer lessons, trail rides, and healing opportunities. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Schools will pilot VOLT-AI in Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Col. Zadok Magruder, and Seneca Valley beginning Monday, March 2. The tool works with existing security cameras (flagging potential safety issues) and will be tested for one month with input from students, staff and community members.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • During a Feb. 5 meeting, MCPS presented the new MSDE math policy to improve math instruction from Pre-K to grade 12 with revised standards, daily math blocks for K-8, and a two-year integrated algebra course starting fall; the Board raised concerns over early implementation and teacher training.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • The Montgomery County board in Rockville voted to start closure proceedings for MBLI, the county's only charter school, if it fails to fix special education compliance issues by March 30. The school opened in August & relocated to Germantown.  MoCo360
  • MCPS schools assure families that student privacy is maintained and immigration status is never asked at enrollment, emphasizing that schools remain safe for every child. Administrators add that resources are available online to support families.  Montgomery County Public Schools

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles held a committee hearing on Thursday to review maternal and infant health gaps in Montgomery County and requested that DHHS submit a written action plan within 60 days, including a study to reopen a birthing center closed years ago.  Montgomery Community Media
  • DC Water crews reached the damaged section of the Potomac Interceptor in Montgomery County and began clearing debris and sludge from the collapsed pipe after a month-long cleanup of over 240 million gallons of wastewater spilled since Jan. 19. Full repairs are expected mid-March.  FOX 5 DC
  • Montgomery County Board of Education approved a $3.78 billion Fiscal Year 2027 operating budget — a 5.2% spending increase with reduced county tax requests — and the proposal now awaits review by the County Executive and Council.  Montgomery County Public Schools

  • The free monthly Walk with a Doc event offers a health talk on fiber benefits and a 1-mile walk led by doctors at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, while similar Saturday gatherings run by chapters in Silver Spring, Bethesda, and Potomac (some requiring registration) invite community members to join.  MoCo360
