ECONOMY NEWS

  • Maryland lost nearly 15,000 federal jobs in 2025 as the workforce dropped from 163,100 to about 148,500. The Labor Department has offered job fairs and a $700 emergency loan to support affected workers.  MoCo360

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Poolesville officials rallied Tuesday at the Maryland landing of White’s Ferry to urge its reopening after five years of closure. Montgomery County has kept a $3 million offer on the table to secure a deal by July 1, prompting local property owners to work together.  MoCo360
  • Montgomery County taxicabs will raise their fare to $2.50 per mile on Feb. 1, with a $1 surcharge for trips between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.; the change ends a 15-year freeze and applies to Call-n-Ride accessible cabs, while the subsidy program continues for qualifying residents.  WUSA9
  • Montgomery County bans plastic bags effective today—shoppers must bring their own bags when shopping in county stores to help reduce plastic waste.  WUSA9
