Stephen Houston delves into how the Maya expressed sound and meaning through hieroglyphs in his newest book, Vital Signs: The Visual Culture of Maya Writing. Join the author for a conversation with Thomas B. F. Cummins, director of Dumbarton Oaks. Vital Signs is based on Houston’s A. W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts, delivered at the National Gallery of Art in 2023.

A book signing will follow the conversation, with copies available for purchase.
