About this event

You may not always think about it, but chairs play a central role in everyday life. From dining and working to relaxing and socializing, they quietly shape how we live. Many of the chairs still in use today were designed in the 20th century-and have stood the test of time for their comfort, function, and striking visual presence. Art historian Jennie Hirsh explores the history of iconic modern chairs from around the world, tracing how designers reimagined seating for a rapidly changing century. Key examples include Eileen Gray's Transat chair, Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret's Grand Comfort chair, Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona chair, Jean Prouvé's Standard Chair, Jens Risom's lounge chair, Eero Saarinen's Womb chair, Charles and Ray Eames' Lounge Chair and Ottoman, Verner Panton's Stacking Chair and Eero Aarnio's Ball chair. Hirsh considers how these designs developed alongside major architectural and housing projects in Europe and the United States, and highlights influential manufacturers such as Knoll, Herman Miller, and Vitra. Ultimately, Hirsh traces how these seminal chairs became far more than functional objects, transforming everyday furniture into enduring works of modern design that continue to influence how we live, work, and gather today.
